Social
Teenagers’ quest for identity, control and choice, and independence and their role confusion – having recently been dependent children but being not yet adults – means that they usually challenge their parents to some degree or another. The social arena is one in which many of these challenges are very commonly evident. Here are a few of the issues surrounding the social development of teenagers that parents have shared with me:
Teenagers can be heavily influenced by their peers, and often base their behavioural choices upon the approval and acceptance of friends. This may even include risky and/or illegal behaviours and activities
Romantic/sexual relationships start to develop and to become important
Teenagers can make such strong and long-term relationship commitments that other aspects of their life (studies, aspirations, family relationships and even health) suffer
Teenagers can experience feelings of omnipotence – ‘it won’t happen to me’ thinking – to the extent that they engage in risky behaviours and actions despite being conscious that these may result in unwanted consequences such as becoming pregnant, acquiring a sexually transmitted disease, driving or behaving recklessly or even illegally while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Teenagers can become involved in very closed gangs or cliques, which are characterized by dress/appearance codes, common behaviours and attitudes, and participation in certain activities. Some may even engage in secret rituals and use secret styles of communication. This is generally more evident in the earlier stages of adolescence
Teenagers are typically very self-absorbed, to the degree that they can believe they are the centre of everyone else’s attention and this can mean they are hyper-sensitive to comments from others about their appearance or actions, which can lead to high emotion and conflictual situations.
